Elmer H. Doerr, 91, of Akron, Ohio and formerly of Norwalk, Ohio, died Monday evening, September 17, 2012 in his son's home.
He was born July 13, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey and came to Norwalk, Ohio in 1967 from Edison, New Jersey.
Elmer moved to Akron in 2008. He was a member of the Norwalk First Presbyterian Church.
Elmer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WW II as a fighter pilot. He was qualified for day and night flying and landing on aircraft carriers. Elmer was an instrument rated commercial airline pilot.
He was a member of National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter #50. Elmer retired, after 45 1/2 years of service, in 1986 from New Departure in Sandusky, Ohio.
He enjoyed woodworking and clock repair.
Elmer is survived by his sons and daughter in law, Edward J. Doerr of Wilmington, Delaware and James E. and Gail Doerr of Akron, Ohio, 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Walter Doerr of Westfield, New Jersey and by his sister in law, Thelma Doerr of Toms River, New Jersey.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve in 2003 and by his brothers, Robert and Clifford Doerr and by his sister in law, Loraine Doerr. The family would like to extend special thanks to Elmer's many caregivers including Hospice VNS, Ridgewood Rd.; Dr. Sandra Hazra; Nurse Gail Bujorian; Nurse Mary Grabel; Kevin Vincent; Kenny Barkley; and Teresa Hendricks. Friends may call Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 3:30 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Adrian Doll will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
