William R. “Dick” Smith, 83, of Norwalk, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio.

He was born June 17, 1924 in Attica, Ohio and was a lifelong area resident. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in W.W. II. He was a former driver for the Pet Milk Company in Fremont, Ohio, the France Stone Company and had worked on the Nicoplate Railroad during the time of steam locomotive engines. He was a former truck driver and mechanic for Norwalk Truck Lines and later drove for Norwalk Furniture Company. He was the former owner of Dick’s Garage in Norwalk from 1966 to 1999 and later bought his own truck and drove for 14 years with Detroit/Pittsburgh Steel Company. He was a member of Eagles Aerie #711 and Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion, Norwalk and was a former Auxiliary Policeman for the Norwalk Police Department . He enjoyed NASCAR and Stock Car Racing and was an avid professional sports fan.

He is survived by his daughters, Judith Ann Lawrence of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Carol and Harry Askin of Westlake, Ohio, Penny and John Schetter of Tiffin, Ohio, Pam M. and Fernando Esparza of Sandusky, Ohio and Delight E. and Terry Ellis of Bellevue, Ohio and by his son, Lynn E. “Louie” Ditty of Norwalk, Ohio, 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Gerald Smith of Bellevue, Ohio and Bruce and Marabel Smith of Bellevue, Ohio and by his sisters in law, Marge Smith of Monroeville and Lois Smith of Poland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara G. (Westgate) (Ditty) Smith in 1999, by his son, Steven Smith in 1978, by his brothers, Donald and Eldon Smith, and by his sisters, Eileen DeMarco and Madeline Edwards and by his son in law, Don Lawrence in 2002.

Friends may call on Friday, May 23, 2008 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, where Eagles services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post #41, Norwalk.
