WAKEMAN — William E. (Bill) Davis, Jr., 83, of Wakeman, died Monday at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1924 in Elyria, son of the late William E. and Bertha (Landoll) Davis. He had lived in Wakeman for the past 55 years. He was a 1942 graduate of Wakeman High School where he excelled in sports. He was a veteran of the Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard a landing craft support vessel (LCS 84) as a gunnery mate; in particular note, the Battle of Okinawa.
He retired from Ridge Tool Company, Elyria as a machinist in the chaser department in 1987 with more than 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wakeman, American Legion Post 689, and Knights of Columbus 626, Norwalk.
He was a founding member and coach of the original Townsend-Wakeman-Camden Little League and was active in the construction of the former Jenny Field, Wakeman.
He enjoyed traveling, especially visiting his children and grandchildren in various states and countries. He was an avid sports fan and attended countless Western Reserve sporting events in support of his children and the community. He also enjoyed the Cleveland professional sport teams. He was renowned for his sense of humor. His hobbies included flower and vegetable gardening and his long running Thursday night poker playing.
He is survived by his long time companion, Betty White of New London; his children, William E. “Ed” and wife Peggy Cassidy Davis of Norwalk, Denise and husband, Frank Walley of Plano, Texas, Jeannette and husband Dick Vasquez of Tucson, Ariz., Carol and husband, Patrick Finnegan of Amherst, LTC John and wife Kathy Olcott Davis of Plano, Texas, LTC Gregory and wife, Lianne Greene Davis of Plano, Texas, Barbara and husband, Steve Kill of St. Marys, Lorraine and husband, Dave Grosswiler of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mary Clare and husband, Patrick Haeuptle of Sandusky, Kelly Davis of Plano, Texas, Tracy and husband, Jules Abbosh of Jacksonville, Fla., Peter and wife, Tina Davis of Norwalk, Colleen and husband, David Goetz of Kissimmee, Fla. and Jere and wife, Marianne Davis, Plano, Texas; 42 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Eileen Pheifer of New London and Bertha Coultrip of Wakeman; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Nadine L. (St. Marie) Davis in 1988; and a sister, Mary Marvin.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman where prayer services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 46 E. Main St., Wakeman with the Revs. Doug Taylor and Dennis L. St. Marie co-officiating. Burial with military rites will follow ub St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wakeman.
