NOVA — LaVerne Phyllis (Biddinger) Snyder, 96, of Nova, died Monday at her home.
She was born Feb. 4, 1912 in Troy Township, daughter of the late Clayton Orville and Rena Iona (Landon) Biddinger. She graduated from Troy Centralized School in 1929.
She sold cosmetics for the former California Perfume Company, which later became known as Avon, until 1930. She also worked at the Nova Post Office for several years.
She married Lawrence Snyder on Sept. 3, 1931 and moved to a farm in Rochester Township, where she resided until 2004.
An active farm wife, she handled bookkeeping for the family dairy farm, took care of the animals and helped produce butter, maple syrup, and apple butter.
She was an adviser for the Rochester 4-H Club and active within the group for 12 years.
She and her husband were active in the State Grange and the New London Grange, where she held the office of Chairman of Women’s Activities and also Subordinate Lecturer. She was also active in the American Farm Bureau.
She was a member of the Rochester Methodist Church, and a former member of the Rochester Historical Society.
She enjoyed showing flowers at the Annual Garden Club and Flower Show and was a member of the Rochester Garden Club.
She and her husband traveled extensively over the years.
She is survived by daughters, LaDonna Snyder and Laverne (Pete) Hensen of Nova, and Lauretta Snyder Wilcox of Norwalk; four grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren and three adopted great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jessie Biddinger Carrick of Amherst.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lawrence in October 2000; a brother and sister-in-law, LaRue and Elenora Biddinger; a son-in-law, Oron Wilcox II; and a great-granddaughter, Autum Ray Hare.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London and from 1 until the time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Revs. Christine Bell and Daniel Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in Nova Cemetery.
