ROCHESTER, Mass. — Kathryn E. Phillips of Rochester, Mass., died suddenly on April 23, 2008.
She was the widow of E. Howard Phillips, daughter of John and Gertrude Scheid, sister of Harold, Willard, Warren Lowell, Scheid, Marjorye Schneider, Grace Hanlon. Mother of Elaine Morse, Marion, Mass. and Vero Beach, Fla., Howard Phillips, Haverhill, Mass., five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Greta Scheid.
Kathryn graduated from Monroeville High School and Oberlin Business School. She worked for the U.S.D.A. and was transferred to many states, meeting her husband, an entomologist with the USDA. He died in 1975.
Kathryn loved her family, cards, gardening and arranging flowers, traveling, reading, playing the piano and organ. She was a past president of the Wareham Garden Club and was honored with a 100th birthday party one week before her death.
She was a past secretary of the Tobey Hospital and remained in her home until her death.
Her relatives and friends had a 100th birthday party on her birthday with 100 guests and a family dinner with 43 guests.
She was alert and said it was the best party she had ever had and she was going out with a blast, which she did.
Arrangements for a memorial service were made by her nieces, Shirley and Beverly Mahl and Barbara Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Pontiac.
