MILAN — June E. (Baxter) Doerner, 90, of Milan, died Tuesday in Norwalk Memorial Home following an extended illness.

She was born June 21, 1917 in Steuben.

She graduated from Berlin Heights High School and lived in Milan for 63 years.

Beginning in 1936, jobs being scarce, she went to work picking peas for 1-cent a pound, berries for 1-and-a-half cents a quart and hoed for $1.25 a day. She had worked at the Berlin Heights Drug Store where she made ice cream bars. Later she worked at the Berlin Box Co., Huron Kraut Co., Bellevue Candy Co., where she wrapped Dum Dums, and finally at Philco Co. in Sandusky.

She was a member of Edison Memorial United Methodist Church, the WSCS of the Church, a life-long member of the Milan Mothers Club and the Pinochle Club. She enjoyed her family and music.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Donna (Ted) Gastier of Milan and Beverly (Gordon) Cring of Norwalk; daughter-in-law, Sharon Doerner of Norwalk; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Russell Doerner, who died April 8, 1999; a son, Larry Doerner, who died February 5, 2003; her parents, Arthur and Marjorie (Ryerson) Baxter; sisters, Joy Baxter, Janette Baxter, Helen Diringer, and Annabelle Settles; and brothers, John Baxter and Beers Baxter.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Groff Funeral Home, 1 S. Main St., Milan and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Edison Memorial United Methodist Church, where funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jeffrey Stoll officiating.

Burial will follow in Milan Cemetery.
