NEW LONDON — Hazel S. Cummings, 98, of New London, died Tuesday at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands in this village.  

She was born Sept. 17, 1909 in Adamsville, N.Y., daughter of the late Julius and Gertrude (Swift) Griffin. She grew up in Adamsville and then lived in Newcomb, N.Y. where her husband worked as chief engineer at the National Lead Mine during World War II.

After the war, she relocated to New London, where her husband was the manager of Firelands Electric Co-op until his death in 1962.

She spent three years as a house mother at Oberlin College in the late 1960s. She was a past board member of the New London Library and a past member of the New London Garden Club.   

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Ann Reniger of Grayling, Mich; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Cummings in 1962; a son-in-law, Henry A. Reniger; a brother, Edward Griffin; and a sister, Rene Eldridge.  

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon Monday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London.  

A graveside service will take place at a later date in Hartford, N.Y.
