LORAIN — Althea M. Mathews (nee Miller) 99 of Lorain died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph, Lorain, Ohio.
She was born September 24, 1908 in Ridgefield Twsp., Huron Co., Ohio. She graduated from Monroeville High School, in 1926 and from Tiffin Business University in 1927. Althea lived in Lorain from 1932 to 1958, where she and her late husband owned and operated Mathews Funeral Home at 1783 East 31st Street until they moved to Largo, Florida.
After Mr. Mathews death in 1964 she stayed in Largo and was associated with Feaster Memorial Homes there until her retirement in 1978. In 1986 she returned to Lorain to be near her children. Mrs. Mathews also owned and operated Althea Flower Shop on Pearl Avenue, Lorain from 1932 until 1936, she managed the Needlework Dept. of M. O’Neil Department Store in Sheffield Township for two years until 1958.
She was a member of Highland United Presbyterian Church of Largo and was a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church of Amherst. She has been a member of the South Lorain Business Woman’s Association. She was an ambulance driver for the Red Cross during World War II. In 2006, Althea was invited to speak at her great granddaughter’s graduation from the Monroeville High School where she had graduated eighty years previously.
Among the survivors are her sons Chase B. Heyman of Norwalk, Ohio, Douglas W. (Carol) Mathews of Lorain, daughter Dawn M. (Vince) Moreno of Lorain, 12 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Walter L. Heyman in 1929, her second husband William A, Mathews in 1964, parents Edward H. and Katherine (nee Schafer) Miller, sister La Fayle Heyman and a daughter in law Elizabeth Heyman in 1991.
Friends may call Thurs., May 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 E. 31st St., South Lorain. Friends may also call Fri. 10:00 AM until time of service at 10:30 AM in Heritage Presbyterian Church, 515 Leavitt Rd. Amherst, Rev. James Smucker, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Monroeville, Ohio.
