NOVA - Walter Babiak, 85, of Nova, died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Baligrod, Poland, son of the late Anton and Marra (Szpak) Babiak. He had lived in Germany, Australia, and Cleveland, moving to Nova in 1959. While in Poland, he was a member of the Ukrainian partisans who battled both the Soviet and Nazi forces.

He and his wife had owned and operated Wally's Grocery Store in Nova from 1959 to 1968. They then built the Continental Country Store in Nova in 1969. Walter was well known for repairing clocks.

He is survived by daughters, Angela Robertson of Nova and Gisela (Paul) Mattingly of Chippewa Lake; and a grandson and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Wife Maria in October; a son-in-law, Dick Robertson; three sisters and two brothers.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, where memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Harry Finkbone will officiate.
