NEW LONDON - Robert Carter White, 93, of New London, died Thursday. White, the second son of Daniel Ford and Florence Carter, was born May 31, 1914 in Akron, Ohio. The early part of his life was spent in Akron, Atlanta, Jacksonville and Mansfield.
During World War II he volunteered for Officer Candidate School after his basic training in Atlantic City. After OCS in Miami he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. His first assignment was in Augusta, Ga. He was transferred to Tampa, Fla., and was promoted to captain as part of the original Air Force replacement depot. As a personnel officer and commanding officer of HQ & HQ Squadron consisting of approximately 300 men. He assigned men to B17 Aircraft. After serving over three years in World War II, he married Ruth Boerger and moved back to New London where he stayed for the rest of his life. They were married over 58 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Carole Routman, son in law, Rob, a grandson, and numerous family members and friends.
He retired from the C E Ward Company, formerly of New London, where he was employed as sales manager and vice president of merchandising. He came out of retirement twice to work for Thomas Creative Apparel, Inc., of New London, where he continued to work for an additional 15 years.
He was a 70-year member of Floral Lodge No. 260, F. & A.M., lifetime member of the Consistory and a 32nd Degree Mason, as well as being a member of the Shriners. Other affiliations include a lifetime member of the New London Rotary Club and the New London United Methodist Church. He organized the Cap & Gown Association of America which met in New York annually, where he served as president for two years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in 2003, two brothers, Gordon White and Richard Starbird.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, with Masonic Services at 7:30. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Cathy Ake officiating. Burial will be at the Grove Street Cemetery, New London in the family plot beside his wife.
