SANDUSKY - Robert J. Witter, 81, of Sandusky, died Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 2007, in the Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 1, 1925 in Perry, son of the late Cleetus B. Witter and Marguerite (Murphy) Marble

He retired from Union Chain in 1993 after 43 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Seaman 1st Class on the USS Ommaney Bay, which was sunk in the Sulu Sea, Jan. 1945.

He was a member of American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529, and a former member of the Machinist's Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially following sporting events, and was an avid Cleveland sports fan.

He is survived by his children, Larry Witter of Sandusky, David Sr. (Ruth) Witter of Huron, and Suzanne (Bill) Walton and Ricky (Sharon) Witter, both of Sandusky; a stepson, Patrick McCallum of Columbus; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul and Richard Witter; sisters, Dorothy Foreman and Shirley Toney; a half-sister, Darlene Krieger; half-brothers, Cleetus Witter, Jr. and Rodger Witter; and his stepmother, Lois Witter.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alberta M. (Steffenhagen) Witter on May 16, 1981; his second wife, Roberta D. (Steffenhagen) Witter on May 7, 1991; sisters, Rosemary Martin and Marjorie Lundell, a half-sister, Ethel Airwyke, a grandson, Mark Witter in 1976, and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Trumbull in 1988.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, where funeral services will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, with the Rev. Robert Patton of St. Stephen United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
