BERLIN TOWNSHIP - Robert D. Sprankel, 67, of Berlin Township, died unexpectedly Wednesday at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

He was born Oct. 27, 1939 in Sandusky and was a lifelong area resident.

He graduated from Berlin Heights High School in 1957. He worked at New Departure Hyatt in Sandusky for 24 years, retiring in 1993. For the past three years he had worked at Willow Way Nursery in Avon. He has been an area farmer all of his life.

He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Huron; a former member of the Huron Lions Club; the Knights of Columbus, Huron; and the Berlin Heights Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marcella (Janka) Sprankel; sons and their wives, Christopher Sprankel of Berlin Township, Dale and Patricia Sprankel of Berlin Township, and Joseph Sprankel and Brenda Poole of Huron; two grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Earleen Sprankel of Dunnell, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Alberta (Nickels) Sprankel.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main St., Huron. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron. The Rev. Jeffery Sikorski will officiate. Burial will be in Peaks Cemetery in Berlin Township.
