March 25, 1916—May 11, 2007

WAKEMAN Richard Shelton Ross, 91, died Friday after a brief illness.

He was born March 25, 1916 at the family farm and resided there his entire life, with the exception of the years spent in the military. He was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Wakeman High School. He enlisted in the army in January of 1941. During his service in World War II he attended Infantry Officers Candidate School. He graduated with a commission and later attained the rank of Captain. He was discharged in 1946 and in 1950 he was recalled to active duty. He served in the Korean Military Advisory Group during that conflict. In 1952 he returned to full-time farming in Wakeman.

Many hours of his life were devoted to his church, the Wakeman Congregational Church, UCC, and the community at large. He was a life-long member of the church, had sung in the choir, served on various committees, was a Sunday School teacher and had held the post of Moderator. He served on the Huron County Board of Education for 15 years. He spent 11 of those years as one of the County representatives to the EHOVE Board of Education.

He began serving on the vocational school board at its inception.

He was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 689 and was on the Board of Directors of the Wakeman Bank Company for 29 years.

Spending time with his family and friends, farming, gardening, traveling and woodworking filled his retirement years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois (Hurst) Ross; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Patti, Joel and Judy; his twin sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Andy Bradish; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Ruth Ross; and a son, Stephen.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wakeman Congregational Church, 14 E. Abbott St.
