MONROEVILLE Richard A. Fritz, 78, of Monroeville, died Friday afternoon at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky surrounded by his family.

He was born April 24, 1929 in Monroeville. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Germany. He was a life long farmer. He also was employed for 32 years in the maintenance department with Ridgefield Township, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, he had worked at the New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monroeville, a life member of St. John Newman Chapter No. 1117, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 547, Monroeville, where he was one of the fish fryers, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 712, Fremont, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6689993, Norwalk. He had also served on the board of directors of the former Monroeville Co-Op. His hobbies included playing euchre, pot luck poker, work, weekly breakfast at Whitey's with his friend Bob, cookouts at the Arches, and being one to the legions fish fryers.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Rose Marie Gies; a son, Richard "Rick" (Beth) Fritz of Monroeville; daughters, Jeanne (John) Soisson of Norwalk and Debra (Daniel) Clapp of North Bend, Wash.; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; sisters, Virginia (Homer) Bungard of Norwalk and Marilyn (Ralph) Pierce of Monroeville; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Edna (Stang) Fritz.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe St., where Christian wake services will be held at 5 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 6:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel St. The Rev. Kenneth J. Lill will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
