VERMILION - Norman Lee Kessler, 78, of Vermilion, died Monday at Community Health Partners in Lorain following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 1, 1929 in Hart County, Ky., where he was raised. He came to Amherst over 48 years ago. He had made his home in Vermilion for the last 41 years.

He was the owner and operator of Kessler Excavating for the last 38 years, excavated basements and septic systems for many area homes. He was a licensed private pilot enjoyed flying planes and had owned several planes himself. After retiring three years ago he was a daily visitor at the Lorain County Airport where he enjoyed spending his time. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Myrial A. Kessler (Chambers); sons, Danny R. Kessler of Howell, Mich., Randy W. Kessler of Lorain and Steve C. Kessler of Vermilion; a daughter, Wendy K. Figliola of North Royalton; a stepdaughter, Barbara J. Lewis of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Talley of Magnolia, Ky., Hazel Skaggs of Magnolia, Ky., Sue Sydnor of Eastview, Ky. and Patsy Hart of Hodgenville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Lee Kessler in 1961; a sister, Marjorie Kessler; and parents, Damon M. And Ella (Ward) Kessler.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in North Fairfield Cemetery, North Fairfield.
