MONROEVILLE - Marie C. Gates, 89, a resident of the Norwalk Memorial Home and formerly of the Willard area, died Monday afternoon at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 17, 1918 in Collins. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroeville, the former St. Sebastian Catholic Church, and the Altar & Rosary Society.
She is survived by a son, John (Mary Kaye) Gates of Norwalk; daughters, Joann (Gus) Showalter of Monroeville, Sharon (Gerald) Ruffing of Bellevue, Ruth Carroll of Monroeville, Marilyn Hanline of Willard, and Bev (John) Thurston of Monroeville; a son-in-law, James Daniel of Arizona; 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Erma Gates of Monroeville; and a brother, Melvin Martin of Monroeville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Gates in 1967; a daughter, Rose Marie Daniel; a son in infancy; grandsons, David Ruffing and Robert Daniel; parents, August and Emma (Hipp) Martin; sons-in-law, Chuck Hanline and Eli Carroll; and one sister and two brothers.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe St., Monroeville. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel St., Monroeville, with the Rev. Kenneth J. Lil officiating. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Bellevue.
