GREENWICH Leland Virgil Girton, 97, of Greenwich, died Wednesday at Hospice of North Central Ohio Inpatient Unit in Ashland.

He was born Nov. 1909 in Broughton, son of the late Chester Arthur and Tacie (Hughes) Girton.

He was a 1929 graduate of Ruggles High School. He received his bachelor of education from Ashland College in 1936 and his post graduate work from Bowling Green State University, Berea College, Kentucky, Kent State University, Ohio Wesleyan University. He served in World War II from 1942 until 1945 in the Company H, 112th Medical Battalion of Ohio's 37th Infantry Division in the South Pacific and the 83rd Ordinance Battalion, Medical Detachment in Europe.

Mr. Girton had been superintendent for Nova Schools, teacher and principal at Ruggles Troy High School and a teacher at Butler High School and New London High School. He was a member of the Ruggles Church, a 78-year member of the Ruggles Grange, the State Grange, National Pomona Grange, Ashland County Teachers Assoc., Huron County Teachers Assoc., Ohio Education Assoc., Ashland County Historical Society, Ohio Historical Society, American Legion, Columbus Post No. 0888, Ohio 37th Infantry Division Assoc., and the National Wildlife Assoc.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis Lee and Carol Girton and Neil Paul and Elizabeth Girton, all of Ruggles; one grandson and one great-grandson, both of Wellington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Pauline (Jacobs) Girton in 1988 and his brother, Deward Girton in 1975.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Martin Daly of the Ruggles Community Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ruggles Cemetery.
