Sept. 9, 1923 - July 3, 2007

NEW WASHINGTON - James E. Kaple, 83, of New Washington, died Tuesday at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born Sept. 9, 1923 in New Washington, Ohio to the late Bernard and Anna (Martin) Kaple.

He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II, when he was a guard at the German Prisoner of War Camp in El Reno, Okla.

He was part owner of the Kaple Lumber Company in Shiloh. Many of his years were spent harvesting timber, and he retired as president of the company in 1983. In 1984, he was awarded for outstanding Logger by Ohio Forestry Association. He and his wife enjoyed traveling during their retirement years.

He was devoted to his wife and children and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also loved to take care of his home, yard and feeding the birds and squirrels.

He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was very involved in the St. Vincent DePaul Society, where he served as president. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and loved listening to music. In 1974 he was awarded best looking beard at the New Washington Bicentennial celebration.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris (Alt) Kaple, whom he wed on April 27, 1943; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen (Thomas) Dechant of Chagrin Falls, Jean Wurm of New Washington, Christine (Mark) Yosick of New Washington, Sarah (Joseph) Nye of New Washington, and Teresa (David) Faeth of New Washington; sons and daughters-in-law, Benedict (Marilyn) Kaple of Fairborn, and Andrew (Janet) Kaple of New Washington; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia (Sonny) Wechter of New Washington; sister-in-law, Dorothy Kaple of New Washington; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mark Wurm; a granddaughter, Emily Wurm; brothers, Bud, Vincent, John, Fr. Timon and Donald Kaple; and sisters, Martina Shakelford, Dolores Uhl and Joan Ervin.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Secor Funeral Home in New Washington. A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington, with the Rev. Gary Stakem officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in New Washington.
