NEW WASHINGTON Herbert C. Kempf, 78 , of New Washington, died Monday at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born April 4, 1929 in Crawford County and grew up on the family farm near Shelby Settlement. He lived in New Washington since 1953.

He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post 405.

During his life he was an employee of Wilkins Air Force Base, Bucyrus Community Hospital and St. Bernard's Catholic Parish, at which he was a member and staunch supporter.

He was an avid gardener and a charter member of the Cranberry Hills Euchre Club.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen S. (Durnwald) Kempf, whom he married Oct. 11, 1952; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Paul Forster of New Washington, Patricia and Randy Brown of Norwalk, Marilyn and Dennis LePore of Bainbridge, Janet and Grant Myers of Huron and Diane and Darren Majoy of Sandusky; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kim Kempf of Sycamore, Richard and Laurie Kempf of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Gary and Marianne Kempf of Shelby and Douglas and Marilyn Kempf of Mansfield; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson; and siblings, Denis (Sharon) Kempf, Jane (Robert) Ruhe, Milton (Eleanor) Kempf all of Crestline, Harlan Kempf, Thomas (Linda) Kempf of Galion, Regine (John) Kreim of Shelby and Judith Kempf of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Alvena (Hook) Kempf; and a sister, Mary (Joseph) Kreim.

Friends may call Thursday from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral Mass at St. Bernard's Church in New Washington. The Rev. Robert Dendinger will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in New Washington.
