HURON - Gene Haas, 84, of Huron, died Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Norwalk.
He was a 1940 graduate of New London High School and a graduate of Dale Carnegie. He has lived in many areas of the east and Midwest during his trucking career, moving to Lakewood in 1965 and lived in Huron for the last three years.
His lifetime career was in the trucking industry, serving a variety of positions with US Truckline. This included being The President of KenDale Express and US Truck Brokerage, both US Truckline subsidiaries. He enjoyed public speaking throughout his career. In May of 1988 Gene and his wife opened Metro USA, Inc. in Rocky River where he remained as President until 1994 when he sold the company to his employees.
He enjoyed connecting with his friends and family on the computer, following local and national sports, completing crossword puzzles. He loved fishing in Lake Erie on his boat. He was a sportsman, avid golfer and a long-time member of Avon Oaks Country Club.
He is survived by his brother, Don of Boston, Va.; a grandson and wife of Wheaton, Md., three great-grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty, in 1994; a son, Kenneth E. in 1983; brothers, Frank and Howard; and parents, Weigand and Mildred (Thornton) Haas.
