CASTALIA Esther A. Behnke, 95, formerly of Castalia, died Saturday evening at Lutheran Memorial Home, Sandusky.
She was born July 15, 1911 in Castalia, and was a Margaretta High School graduate, where she was a star athlete.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Castalia, the Women of the Church, taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the Sewing Circle, the Bible Study Circle, Women's Lunch Bunch, Resthaven Senior Group, and loved to travel and play cards. She was always there to help her family members and was a mother to many.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lois Stang of Monroeville, Carol and Donald Ebert of Sandusky, Janet and Michael Maistros of Chagrin Falls and Diane and William Jacoby, Castalia; 12 grandchildren, six step grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 12 step great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dora Meyers of Castalia and Joan Deering of Greenwich; brothers and a sister-in-law, August Miller and John and Shirley Miller, both of Castalia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Arthur Behnke in 1984; parents, Carl F. and Amelia (Schoewe) Behnke; brothers, Elmer, Lee, Carl, Quentin, Paul, and Calvin Miller; and Alan Stang and Wiley Miller.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Lutheran Church, 203 S. Washington St., Castalia. The Rev. Kathleen Suggitt will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
