NORWALK — Donald J.“Buck” O’Neil, 86, of Norwalk, died Wednesday evening in Gaymont Nursing Center.

He was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Moundsville, W.Va. to the late William and Allie Belle (Jones)

O’Neil and had lived in this area for 54 years. He was a member of the Moundsville Methodist Church. He retired as superintendent from A.J. Baltes Construction Company, wherehe had worked since he was a senior in high school.

He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II with the 4th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge (Normandy Invasion) and Arrowhead Invasion. He was awarded the Rifle Marksmanship Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.

He was a life member of Firelands Post No. 2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars and was also a member of Ken Bur Bell Post No. 41 American Legion, Eagles Aerie No. 711 and the Norwalk Bronson Conservation Club. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, fishing, hunting, and being with his grandchildren — he never missed one of their sporting events.

He was a daily visitor of the American Legion and Schild’s IGA, both in Norwalk.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Verna J. O’Neil of Norwalk; sons and daughters-inlaw, Michael P. and Victoria O’Neil of Charlotte, N. Ca. and Jack R. and Patricia O’Neil of Norwalk; and four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel Coletti.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. The Rev. Ron Gerlach will officiate.

Burial will be in Fitchville Cemetery.
