NEW LONDON - Donald Akers, 78 of New London, died Saturday, at his home, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 8, 1928 in Floyd County, Ky., son of the late Amos and Stella (Hall) Akers. He had lived in Kentucky and Ohio all of his life, and had been in New London since 2003.
He was a graduate of Betsy Layne High School and had served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the American Legion Delaware Post 0883. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita; sons, Larry Akers of Harold, KY, Donald Hamilton of Fitchville, Danny Akers of Galion and Randolf Akers of Galveston, Ky.; daughters, Nickie Hall of Grethel, Ky., Dianna Miller of Bellevue, Donna Pierce and Diane Hall, both of Versailles, Ky., and Denise Conn of Crestline; stepsons, Al Hamilton Jr. of Nova, Ron Hamilton of New London, Tony Hamilton of Texas, Lawrence Hamilton of Harold, Ky. and Terrence Hamilton of Wakeman; stepdaughters, Pamela Roos of Norwalk, Mary VonBehren of New London and Libby Ives of Wakeman; 32 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia May Case of Grethel, Ky.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Carmel, Ijellen and Arvel Akers; a sister, Pauline Akers; and a granddaughter, Renee Hall.
Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Charles Mead will officiate and burial will follow.
