FREMONT - Cleo M. Roland, 91, of Fremont formerly of Bellevue for more than 30 years and of Conneaut, died Saturday at the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 28, 1915 in Garrett, Ind. to the late Cary and Mary Gloria (Best) Smothers.
She graduated from Conneaut High School in 1935 and had been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bellevue and then of Sacred Heart Parish in Fremont. She was a volunteer teachers helper and tutor at Immaculate Conception School. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, ceramics and painting and being with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Rosann and Allen Hasselbach of Flat Rock and Kathy and Rick Stokes of Bellevue; sons and daughters-in-law, Cary "Bud" and Chris Roland of Bellevue and John L. and Marilyn Roland of Norwalk; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward John Roland, whom she married Feb. 8, 1946 at St. Mary's Rectory, Conneaut; brothers, Norman, Harold and Rene Smothers; sisters, Iona Hahn and Emma Smothers in infancy.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Foos & Son Funeral Home, 311 W. Main St., Bellevue with a Rosary service at 6:30 p.m. A Mass will take place at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Bellevue. The Rev. Keith Stripe, pastor of Immaculate Conception Church will officiate. Burial in Fireside Cemetery at Fireside in Thompson Township.
