NORWALK Charles W. Roth, 62, of Norwalk, died Sunday morning at Elyria Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 16, 1944 in Norwalk and was a lifelong resident.

He was an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Norwalk as a lector and a lay Eucharistic Minister, a 1962 graduate of St. Paul High School and he attended The University of Toledo. He was an Ohio High School Athletic Association baseball umpire, a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 626 and the Father Stephen Badin Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Norwalk. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Vietnam and was a life member of Post 2743 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Known as "the Voice of the Flyers," he was a longtime sports and activities announcer for St. Paul High School and previously coached baseball, basketball and golf at St. Paul. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and season ticket holder. He also was an ardent fan of Ohio State Football. He enjoyed woodworking and cabinetry and was well known for his handcrafted baby cradles, which he presented as gifts to new parents.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marcia (Thiel) Roth; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael C. and Jeanette Roth of Norwalk and John P. and Michelle Roth of Norwalk; daughters and sons-in-law, Mercedes Vasconez (Leonardo) of Riobamba, Ecuador, Jennifer and William Bunch of Houston, Texas, Julie and Dean Wise, Suzanne Roth and Annamarie Roth, all of Norwalk, and Cecelia and Joshua Monahan of Delaware; nine grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Angela Roth of Norwalk, Donald and Mary Roth of Norwalk and Paul and Jeannie Roth of Cleveland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Florence (Brengartner) Roth; a sister in infancy, Mary Florence Roth; and a grandson, Isaac Thomas Roth.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk, with a wake service at 4:30 p.m. and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard will be posted from 5 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk. The Revs. Frank Kehres and Mike Geiger will co-officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Norwalk.
