Dec. 6, 1922 April 19, 2007

ELYRIA Carl D. Craven, 84, Elyria, died early Thursday morning at his home.

He was born near Mount Gilead, the son of the late Earl and Carrie (Kempton) Craven.

After his graduation from Chesterville High School, he enlisted in the Army and served during World War II.

He worked for Bob Meyer Chevrolet in Norwalk, where he was their parts manager for 15 years. He later managed the Firelands Retirement Center in Lorain until 1993 when he and his wife moved to Dublin where he became a full-time pastor of the Philadelphia Church of God. There he oversaw eight churches in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Before his health faltered, he enjoyed playing the trumpet.

He will be remembered for devotion to the church, as a great help to his congregations and a spiritual adviser to those in need, and for the kind and helpful manor in which he carried himself.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen M. (Brown) Craven, whom he married April 2, 1975; sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronald and Tanette Craven of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Jerry Craven of Healdsburg, Calif.; daughters, Barbara Rees of San Ramon, Calif. and Candace Craven of San Rafael, Calif.; stepsons, James Carstensen of Elyria, David Carstensen of Sun Valley, Nev. and Larry Carstensen of San Antonio; stepdaughters, Lynda Davis of Elyria, and Janice Farber of Silver Springs, Nev.; and four grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hull and Scott Craven; and sisters, Edna Crock and Sylvia Figley.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Craven & Snyder Funeral Home, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Kenneth Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.

Memorial gifts be sent to the Philadelphia Church of God, P.O. Box 3700, Edmond, Okla., 73083.
