CROTON - Barbara R. James, 74, of Croton, died early Saturday at Bennington Glen Care Center in Marengo.
She was born June 30, 1933 in Shade, daughter of the late Raymond and Mabel (Frost) Taylor. A lifelong resident of Croton, she graduated from Hartford High School in 1949. In 1968, she earned a bachelor's degree in education, magna cum laude and was a Fulbright scholar, top 100 presidential honors. She then earned a master's degree in education, also from The Ohio State University, where she was a Jennings scholar.
She was a lifelong educator. For 30 years she taught special education, as well as second and third grade at Alexandria Elementary School in the Northridge school district.
Dedicated to the education of her students, her life was centered on family and teaching. She enjoyed gardening, was a member of the Croton United Methodist Church and an avid fan of Ohio State football and basketball teams.
She is survived by her husband of almost 57 years, Frank "Butch" James, whom she married Oct. 22, 1950, daughters, Melissa James of Norwalk and Rebecca James of Meadville, Pa.; a son, Don (Teri) James of Centerburg; two grandchildren; and a brother, Tom Taylor of Millersport.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph and Steve Taylor.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, Sunbury. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartford Cemetery with her son, Don James, officiating.
