SANDUSKY Dorothy A. (Mapus) Simmons, 85, formerly of The Commons of Providence, Sandusky, died Wednesday at Stein Hospice, Sandusky after a lengthy illness.
She was born March 24, 1921 in Vickery and lived her life in the Vickery area for many years, graduating from Townsend High School in 1939. Dorothy was the eldest of five children.
She enjoyed outings with her special friends in the "Lunch Bunch" and was a member of the Eagles Club in Sandusky.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Armour of Sandusky; sons, Roger (Betty) Simmons of Daly City, Calif. and Dennis and daughter-in-law, Randy Simmons of rural Sandusky; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Kenneth Kingsborough of Castalia; sister-in-laws, Jean Mapus of Fremont, Ruth Mapus of Sandusky, Pat Mapus Dubois of Norwalk, Rosie Mapus of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Dorothy Simmons Hedberg Wilcox of Kansas City, Mo; a brother-in-law, Louis (Lucille) Simmons of Higginsville, Mo.; 25 nieces and nephews and their children also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul Austin Simmons, Oct. 19, 1994; parents, Albert and Dora (Vellizuette) Mapus; father and mother-in-law, Whitsett Porter Simmons and Viola (Gentzel) Simmons; a son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Armour, Jr; brothers, Oscar, Leo and John Mapus; sisters-in-law, Marqueritte (Wink) Morgan, Naomi (Lee) Ommert; brothers-in-law, Glenn (Jean) Simmons, Norman (Maggie Alta) Simmons with their respective spouses; and sister-in-law, Norma Deen Simmons; nephews, Richard Mapus, Larry Mapus and James Mapus.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde, where the funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Ellsworth Cemetery.
