 SANDUSKY - Donald A. Erney, 91, of Sandusky, formerly of 1420 Central Avenue, passed away unexpectedly early Friday evening, July 16, 2010, at his home at Parkvue Place.

Born on December 27, 1918 in Sandusky, the son of Norbert and Sylvani (Fox) Erney.  He was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary's High School and had attended Ohio State University.  A veteran of the U.S. Army having served during W.W. II in the infantry and was awarded a bronze star.  Don had played the piano and trumpet in the "Erney Family Orchestra," a traveling family musical group, during the war.

He worked for the U.S. Gypsum Company, National Distillers and later for Clevit-Harris for nearly 20 years, before retiring in 1974. After he retired he worked for the State Liquor Store for 8 years.

Don was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he had ushered for 52 years and a life member of the V.F.W. Post # 2529.

He is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Ed "Mick") Coles of Milan, Dona (Ed) Schexnayder of Belton, TX; son, Jeff (Lynn) Erney of Sandusky; eight grandchildren, Danny (Kaycee) Coles, Sara (Jim) Sanfilippo, Amy (Jason) Appel, Kelly, Alan "A.J.", Laura Erney, Eric and Scott Schexnayder; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Austin, Luke, Lily; sister, Angela Dominick of Sandusky; brother, Duane (Catherine) Erney of Columbus; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Michel) Erney on July 15, 1989; brother, Lamont Erney; sister, Juanita Stack; and other relatives.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010, from 4-8 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.  Prayers will be recited Tuesday morning, July 20, 2010, at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky.  Fr. David Nuss officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.  Military honors will be conducted graveside by the American Legion Post # 83.
