A man found with heroin on him in Willard was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in prison.

Jared M. Hale, 26, of 104 Crestwood Drive, Willard, pleaded guilty at the same hearing to possession of heroin.

Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Patrick Hakos said as part of the plea deal, the state wouldn't pursue an indictment on failure to appear.

Hale must reimburse the Willard Police Department $40 to cover the cost of drug testing. He also had his driver's license suspended for six months.

The defendant's conviction is for an Oct. 28 incident. Hakos said officers saw Hale walking unsteadily down the street, decided to take him into custody to keep him from harming himself or others, found heroin in his possession and when police handcuffed Hale, "he decided to run." Officers took him into custody shortly afterward.

Hale's prison term was a joint recommendation between prosecutors and Huron County Public Defender David Longo.
