A suspected drunk driver told police he attempted to miss a pothole while going nearly twice the posted speed limit in Wakeman.

Kenneth J. Smiley, 41, of Norwalk, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, left of center and speeding. Wakeman Police Chief Tim Hunker said Officer Kevin Lowry clocked Smiley going 67 mph in a 35-mph zone when the officer saw him driving westbound in the eastbound lane of U.S. 20.

"The vehicle came to a stop on East Main Street in Wakeman," Hunker said.

"The driver ... told the officer that he was trying to miss a pothole," the chief added. "He (Smiley) refused the breathalyzer and was even offered a blood test that he also later refused."

Police, while searching the vehicle, also reported finding a pill in an unmarked pill vial that was seized for testing.

Smiley was arrested and transported to the Huron County Jail.
