The Milan post of the state Highway Patrol has concluded the investigations into the many traffic crashes from Wednesday, March 12.
Here are some of the details determined through the investigations.
Overall, 50 different crash investigations were conducted on March 12. Investigators determined 126 different vehicles were damaged, 49 individuals claimed injuries of varying degree, and three people died.
On the eastbound side of the roadway between mile posts 101 to 102, there were two large crash areas. Investigation determined six separate crashes occurred here. This area was by far the worst due to the severe blowing snow making for limited visibility. Fifty-five vehicles crashed in this stretch of roadway, causing 36 injuries, with three people losing their lives. This area was also where Trooper Andrew Clouser was struck and injured.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to slow down and increase following distances during inclement weather, be it snow, fog, or heavy rain. The causative factors in these crashes were following too close and unsafe speed for the weather conditions.
