A high-speed vehicle pursuit on I-90 Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of a Bedford man, suspected of robbing an Erie, Pa. bank.
Pennsylvania State Police notified the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 10:26 a.m., they were pursuing a suspect just involved in a bank robbery and would be entering Ashtabula County.
First National Bank, at 6960 Peach St. in Erie was robbed at about 10:10 a.m.
A lone black male reportedly entered the bank and presented a note to the teller demanding money, according to PSP.
A weapon was not shown, but the suspect indicated he had a weapon. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money in a white Chevrolet Traverse and headed southbound on SR 19, according to PSP.
The vehicle was then spotted westbound on I-90 in the western part of Erie County. The suspect refused to stop and fled troopers at speeds of more than 100 mph. He traveled across the state line in to Ashtabula County where OHP engaged in the pursuit, according to reports.
The suspect traveled approximately 35 miles into Lake County. Stop sticks were deployed just across the Lake County line. The suspect drove around the stop sticks and struck another westbound vehicle from behind, according to OHP.
The suspect vehicle then drove into the median and became disabled. The suspect was taken into custody by Ashtabula Post units without further incident, according to OHP.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck sustained injury and was transported to TriPointe Medical Center in Concord Township by Lake County Leroy Township Rescue, according to OHP.
The suspect was transported to Lake County Jail on OHP charges of vehicular assault, a third-degree felony; fleeing an eluding, a fourth-degree felony; and assured clear distance, according to OHP.
Further charges are expected pending investigation by PSP. The suspect’s name is pending release.
The OHP portion of the pursuit lasted approximately 10 minutes and covered 15 miles. No injuries to law enforcement or damage to law enforcement vehicles were reported, according to OHP.
