A rural New London man accused of torching a stolen pickup truck is out on bond.

Elliott J. Shepherd, 27, of 2678 Jennings Road, is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle. If convicted, he faces six to 18 months behind bars.

Shepherd was booked into the Huron County Jail on Feb. 8. He was released three days later upon posting a $10,000 bond with a 10-percent provision.

The Cook Road, New London, victim reported the theft of the truck to the Huron County Sheriff's Office on Dec. 28.

"The inner part of the cab was destroyed," Detective Kayla Zander said.

Once Sgt. Steve Shupp received the theft complaint, he followed up on a tip about Shepherd, Zander said. Detective Sgt. Bill Duncan assisted with the investigation.

Deputies went to Shepherd's residence. Zander said the deputies interviewed the suspect and received consent to search the property for any evidence related the truck theft.

"Mr. Shepherd stopped the officer when he want to look in a shed," she added.

Based on additional information that deputies received during interviews with other people related to the case, they arrested Shepherd, Zander said.
