Prosecutors have charged the boyfriend of a 23-year-old Ashtabula woman with criminal homicide in the death of her 9-month-old nephew. Prosecutors charged her with conspiracy.
Chad Chadwick, 22, is charged with criminal homicide, and Kelly Hemminger, faces the conspiracy charge, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department.
Chadwick and Hemminger, both of 1389 Hamlin Drive, Ashtabula, were taken into custody Monday by the Pennsylvania State Police, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Department.
The nephew, Zeke Hamilton of Geneva, suffered serious injuries to the chest, limbs and head Aug. 31 while staying with Hemminger and Chadwick at a camp in Clarion County’s Washington Township, Pa.
Zeke’s parents had entrusted his care to the couple.
When Zeke’s grandfather went to retrieve him out of his car seat, he found the infant unresponsive. Zeke was taken to the hospital and the police were called.
The infant remained in critical condition at the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was moved to a Hospice unit shortly before his death on Nov. 15.
Hemminger and Chadwick are each being held in the Ashtabula County jail on a $1 million cash 10 percent or surety bond set Monday by Eastern County Judge Robert Wynn.
Hemminger said she would hire an attorney to represent her.
Chadwick said he was indigent and would need a court-appointed lawyer.
An extradition hearing is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 20 in Wynn’s courtroom.
