The search for a 61-year-old male suspect accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a teenage relative is over.
That's because William Marton, of 9512 Ohio 60, Birmingham turned himself into the Erie County Sheriff's Office on Monday afternoon. He will be arraigned today in Vermilion Municipal Court.
"He had made some admissions," Chief Deputy Jared Oliver said. "He left the state. He came back (Sunday) and after he talked to his pastor, he decided to come to the station."
Detective Sgt. Dennis Papineau handled the investigation after the mother of the suspected victim, a 16-year-old girl, filed a report Jan. 21.
"(The girl) actually lives in Lorain County, but this occurred at her grandmother's house in Florence Township," Papineau told the Reflector before Marton was arrested. "This happened when she was between the ages of 7 and 12."
The detective originally interviewed the girl, her mother and grandmother, but Marton wasn't home at the time.
"The grandmother confronted him and he left the residence," Papineau said.
The detective was asked if investigators were able to determine where Marton had been since he left the area. Papineau said the suspect's wife provided statements about his credit card activity in Georgia and Kentucky. However, it's unknown if Marton actually was in those states.
After detectives interviewed Marton on Monday, he was charged with one count each of rape and gross sexual imposition. Marton then was booked into the Erie County Jail.
"We anticipate more charges will be filed during a future session of the Erie County grand jury," Oliver said.
"He seemed remorseful. He knew he did something wrong," Papineau added in a separate interview.
The detective earlier said he believes the girl "was being completely truthful with the information she gave me." He also said the victim's grandmother "was completely surprised" by the allegations and said she hadn't seen anything inappropriate between the girl and the man, but later was able to corroborate some statements the girl made.
