A New Haven motorist with six prior drunken driving convictions has been charged with driving under the influence in connection with a recent traffic stop.

Randy L. Johnson, 59, of 2616 Ohio 61, was stopped at 6:34 p.m. Tuesday on Ohio 162 in Fitchville Township. Sgt. Brian Gockstetter, of the state Highway Patrol's Norwalk post, clocked the driver going 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Johnson's blood-alcohol content on a breath test was .221 percent, Gockstetter said in his report. That's nearly three times the legal limit of .08 percent for drivers in Ohio.

Gockstetter said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Johnson, who nodded "yes" when the trooper asked him if he had anything to drink.

Johnson was charged with DUI and speeding. The patrol had his 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck towed from the scene.

Patrol records indicate Johnson has six DUI convictions -- two in 1994 and one each in 1999, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
