Woman, 65, attacked with knife in her home; second intrusion in four days

TNS Regional News • Sep 4, 2013 at 3:07 PM

Akron police are investigating an assault on a 65-year-old woman who was attacked with a knife inside her Boulevard Street home early Tuesday.

The woman, who was attacked about 3 a.m., was being treated at a local hospital for a nonlife-threatening wound to her chest. A suspect has not been identified.

The break-in was the second at the woman’s residence since Saturday.

Calvin Wells, the victim’s nephew, said his aunt remains hospitalized, but is recovering.

“She’s all right, but she’s definitely upset and in a lot of pain,” Wells said Tuesday. “I just don’t understand why this happened. My aunt don’t hurt nobody. Whoever did this is a damn coward. To do something like this? It’s a cowardly act.”

Authorities say the woman was in her bed when an intruder attacked her.

On Saturday, someone forced open the front door of her home and took money from her purse along with her car keys. Her car later was recovered on East Market Street. Three family members have since moved into the home.

Wells said it appears the same man who broke inside the house Saturday returned early Tuesday. He said the family found a set of car keys Tuesday afternoon while searching the yard for evidence. A crime scene officer came to the house an hour later to retrieve the items, he said. It is not clear if they are the same keys that were taken Saturday, police said.

“All this black-on-black crime, it’s got to stop,” Wells said. “I mean, to do this to a 65-year-old woman? It makes no sense.”

Police said the knife attacker is a black male, between 18 and 30 years old, around 6 feet tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants with a white stripe along each leg.
