Columbus police have released the name of a woman who was found dead on I-71 before dawn on Wednesday after several motorists reported running over her on the dark freeway.
Police still don’t know why Jessica Lynn Nichols, 22, of Columbus, was in the northbound lanes of the freeway just before 5 a.m., said Sgt. Brooke Wilson of the accident-investigation squad.
“That’s part of what we’re investigating,” Wilson said.
Court records show that Nichols lived mostly on the Hilltop in recent years.
Police were called to the stretch of North Side freeway by a trucker who dialed 911 and said he thought he had struck a body in the road.
As he stayed on the line with the 911 dispatcher, other motorists inadvertently ran over Nichols, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Police closed the northbound lanes of I-71 from I-670 to Cooke Road until about noon.
