Driver accused of displaying gun, threatening to shoot people

A Conneaut man who reportedly threatened people with a handgun early Sunday morning faces a felony charge in Conneaut Municipal Court, according to reports.

Cody Fitzgerald, 26, 374 Old Main Road, has been charged with improper handling of a firearm in a vehicle, a fifth-degree felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of using weapons while intoxicated and aggravated menacing and traffic infractions, according to court records.

Fitzgerald had his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges, a court spokesperson said.

Fitzgerald has obtain legal counsel and will have a preliminary hearing on the felony charge at 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to court documents.

Police were contacted around 2:47 a.m. Sunday regarding a subject who was displaying a gun in the area of Park Avenue and had left the area in a white station wagon. Officers intercepted the vehicle at the intersection of Broad and Jackson streets. The vehicle accelerated before coming to a stop near the Conneaut Public Library on Buffalo Street.

The driver, later identified as Fitzgerald, told police there was a gun in the vehicle but he possessed a concealed carry permit, according to a report. Alcohol was found in the vehicle and Fitzgerald was intoxicated, officers said.

Witnesses on Park Avenue told police learned Fitzgerald brandished a gun and threatened to shoot people, according to a report.
