Police used a tip to find and arrest a man wanted on two warrants early Thursday morning, but a local resident denied the suspect was in her apartment.

Just before 3 a.m., the Norwalk Police Department received a tip that Norwalk resident Augustus A. McCree IV, 34, was at 45 N. Hester St. Officers said they responded to the apartment and spoke with the female resident.

"After first indicating Mr. McCree was in the apartment, she later denied he was present," Capt. Eric Hipp wrote in his report. "While a search warrant was being prepared for the residence to search for Mr. McCree, he exited the apartment and was taken into custody."

McCree was arrested on a failure to appear-related probation violation warrant on a 2010 theft by deception conviction and also an assault warrant. The suspected assault is in connection with a May 31 incident investigated by Norwalk police, according to Norwalk Municipal Court records.

He was transported to the Huron County Jail to serve a 10-day sentence.

Police forwarded a report to the Norwalk Law Director's Office for the review of possible charges against the apartment resident.
