A Lima Senior High School teacher pleaded guilty to a felony sex crime Tuesday accusing him of trying to grab and kiss a student over the school's spring break.
Gary E. Jones, 59, pleaded guilty to attempted sexual battery, a fourth-degree felony. He faces up to 18 months in prison when he is sentenced June 10. Jones will be required to register as a Tier III sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life.
The suspended Lima Senior health and physical education teacher did not make a statement in court. He only answered the judge’s questions concerning the waiver of his constitutional rights to enter the guilty plea.
Jones was arrested April 5, the day of the incident. He drove by a 16-year-old girl’s house, noticed her sitting on the porch and stopped. She was a student in his class, said Terri Kohlrieser, an assistant Allen County prosecutor.
Jones called the girl to his car and asked if she wanted to go for a ride. Kohlrieser said the girl never expected Jones to try anything sexual, so she agreed. At some point during the ride, he stopped the car and put one hand behind the girl's head and the other on her thigh, pulling her in to try to kiss her, Kohlrieser said.
The girl resisted and stopped Jones from going forward. She then told a family member, and police were notified, Kohlrieser said.
“He confessed he wanted to have sex with her,” Kohlrieser said.
Jones was hired by Lima schools in 2005. He has been suspended without pay.
Lima schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman said now that Jones pleaded guilty to a felony, he will either resign, or the school will begin steps to fire him.
