The badly decomposed body of a 67-year-old woman was discovered inside of a Barberton home on Wednesday and her son now faces murder charges.
Maureen Petrie was found inside of her 23rd Street Northwest home after police made a welfare check on the residence, said Barberton police officer Marty Eberhart.
“Family members said they had had no contact with relatives for six months,” Eberhart said.
After knocking several times, police entered the home and found Michael Petrie, 32, the victim’s son, and later located the body of his mother, Eberhart said.
“He made statements that implicated himself in the death of his mother,” said Eberhart. “After those statements, detectives conferred with the Barberton prosecutor’s office and he was charged with aggravated murder.”
Eberhart said the woman had been dead for several months.
Barberton Municipal Court records indicate the date of the killing of Maureen Petrie to be Oct. 16, 2012.
Gary Guenther, of the Summit County Medical Examiner’s office, said Petrie “sustained stab wounds to the chest and head.”
Guenther said there was also blunt force trauma to the head. The case has been ruled a homicide.
Libby Sampson, 60, who lives across from the crime scene and has lived on 23rd Street for 34 years, said Maureen Petrie had worked as a machinist.
“I talked to her if she was out in the yard, but she wasn’t conversational,” Sampson said.
A man who rents an apartment in a duplex Petrie owns on 21st Street Northwest came by Wednesday, Sampson said, indicating that she hadn’t collected rent since last year.
Sampson described Michael Petrie was a loner.
“The mother and son were close together,” she said. “You never know what goes on — you don’t know what goes on around you.”
Michael Petrie is in the Summit County Jail.
He made his first court appearance via video before Barberton Municipal Court Judge David Fish Thursday. His bond was set at $1 million.
Akron attorney Jeff James has been appointed to represent him. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.
