A one-vehicle crash in Athens County has resulted in aggravated vehicular assault charges on the driver and additional charges for the person responsible for purchasing the alcohol for the underage driver.

Shelby J. Vore, 19, of Glouster, was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta on Ohio 78 in Athens County, at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday when she failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the roadway and struck two trees, state Highway Patrol troopers said. Vore received minor injuries and her passenger, Shawn Allen McKee, 22, also of Glouster, sustained incapacitating injuries. He was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus by a LifeFlight helicopter.

Through the investigation, troopers said they determined that Vore was under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. Troopers contacted the Ohio Investigative Unit to conduct a trace-back investigation into the origins of the alcohol involved in the crash. Agents from the Athens District Office responded to the scene, and through their investigation, charged Joshua D. Sutton, 23, of Glouster, with buying beer for a person under 21. If convicted, Sutton could face up to $1,000 fine and up to 6-months in jail.

Vore was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, a third-degree felony, OVI and failure to control.

In Ohio, it is illegal to sell or furnish, as well as purchase alcohol for a person under 21.
