A Willard teenager was convicted Monday of having sex with a minor.

Jose Ramirez-Ricardo, 19, of 27 N. Main St., pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a fourth-degree felony. In exchange, Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Richard Woodruff said the state would agree to recommend "community control sanctions," which could include jail time.

Ramirez-Ricardo, a former Plymouth resident, isn't eligible to be sentenced to prison because he has no prior felony convictions. He faces six to 18 months behind bars when he is sentenced Feb. 27. The conviction means Ramirez-Ricardo will be classified as a Tier II sex offender, which means he must register his address every 180 days for the next 25 years.

The Willard Police Department investigated the July 7 incident.

Ramirez-Ricardo "made admissions to police authorities" about having sex with a 14-year-old girl, Woodruff said. It's unknown if the girl knows the defendant, who is out on bond.

Chief Mark Holden has said the girl's parents reported their daughter wasn't where she was supposed to be, but she "was with someone else" when the consensual sex offense happened.

Ramirez-Ricardo was arrested without incident at a Willard traffic stop. An unidentified friend was charged with driving with a suspended license.
