Police are investigating the report of a possibly suicidal man accused of threatening to shoot another man over a suspected affair with his wife.

Melvin D. Peterson, 43, most recently of Minard Place in Norwalk, was arrested during a Plank Road traffic stop when area authorities were searching for him Sunday.

Earlier that day, the Norwalk Police Department received a call from a female subject who accused Peterson of being armed with a shotgun and threatening to shoot another man, Sgt. Jim Montana said.

"It's uncertain what precipitated this report," he added.

"(The other man) possibly was having an affair with (Peterson's) wife," Montana said. "He (Peterson) said that. I don't know if he believes there was an affair.

"He was going after this guy. He changed his mind ... and was going to commit suicide," Montana said.

Police notified the Huron and Erie county sheriff's offices about the situation. Montana said a Huron County deputy saw Peterson driving on the north side of Norwalk on Plank Road.

"We made a traffic stop on Milan Avenue in front of the Hartland Plaza," Montana said. "He was taken out of the vehicle at gunpoint. He was not found to be in possession of a gun."

Peterson was transported to the city jail.

"He hasn't been charged, but he will be," Montana said.

Police were in the process of taking a statement from the possible victim early Sunday afternoon.

Some of Peterson's relatives came to the police station and were overheard asking to see him. Montana told them that wasn't possible because he'd been arrested.

Also as of Sunday afternoon, officers hadn't interviewed Peterson and were trying to identify the female caller.

"We haven't had a chance to interview the complainant yet," Montana said.

Just before 1 p.m., Norwalk firefighters were called to the police station to check Peterson.

"He had a cut on his arm that was bleeding. Again, it's unknown how he sustained that," Montana said.

It's unknown if Peterson was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
