Ohio teen shot dead during home invasion

Wire • Nov 26, 2012 at 9:15 AM

A teen was killed late Saturday night when two unidentified men, one of them armed with a handgun, entered a home and demanded money, police said.

One of the intruders shot 19-year-old Julian Slaven around 10:25 p.m. inside his home in the 5800 block of Judy Drive before both suspects fled the cul-de-sac in a nondescript vehicle, according to Officer Doug Day of the Fairfield Police Department.

Slaven was pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The shooting was not random, Day said.

“I don’t think they just picked that house,” he said. “Obviously, they knew what they were doing.”

Police had had contact with Slaven, but “typically for minor stuff,” Day said.

Julian Slaven’s mother, Tamera Slaven, and a family friend were at home during the incident and dialed 911, he said.

Day said police are working to determine how the two men entered the residence.

“All we know is they got into the home and they weren’t invited,” he said.

Both suspects remain at large, police said.

Kirsten Matala, 17, said the quiet street of 13 houses was “pretty much a family neighborhood” of little children, teenagers and some older people.

“It was shocking to come home last night and see all the cops on the street,” Matala said. “We don’t usually get that.”

Neighbor Brian Bulton, 23, said he noticed that numerous people would briefly visited Slaven’s residence, then leave.

“That house had a lot of traffic in the first place,” Bulton said. “A lot more at night. It’s hard to say (how many) but it’s more than normal.”

Neighbor Danielle Bertrand, 23, said the situation was “definitely heartbreaking.”

“I feel terrible for his mother,” Bertrand said. “The whole thing is really sad.”

Those with information regarding this incident should call Fairfield police at (513) 829-8201 or Crimestoppers at (513) 352-3040.
