Man stabs wife, struggles with deputy

A local man who was upset about his wife not having enough gas was arrested on allegations he stabbed the woman in the hand and later struggled with a Huron County sheriff’s deputy Sunday.

At 10:32 p.m., dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call from a woman who accused her husband of cutting up her dashboard and cutting her hand. At the time she reported she didn’t need any medical attention, according to a deputy’s report.

Her husband, Matthew B. Reed, 37, of 44 W. Willard Ave., walked down Ohio 13, away from the Fitchville Mart, 1596 U.S. 250. Sgts. Steve Shupp and Sgt. Chuck Summers responded.

“Sgt. Summers stayed with the victim,” Capt. Ted Patrick said.

Shupp found Reed walking about 300 yards away from the gas station with a backpack. Patrick said the deputy turned on the lights of his cruiser and pulled behind Reed, who “looked at him and just kept walking.”

The deputy got out of his vehicle, identified himself and told Reed he needed to talk to him.

“He wouldn’t obey any of Sgt. Shupp’s orders to stop,” Patrick said.

Shupp then grabbed Reed’s clothing and reportedly told him again to stop. Reed pulled away from the deputy and the two struggled with each other on the ground, Patrick said.

Reed was charged with two counts of domestic violence and one charge each of resisting arrest and menacing.

After the incident, Shupp drove Reed to Fisher-Titus Medical Center with a reported head injury.

“Halfway through, he said, ‘I just want to go to jail.’ He refused further treatment,” Patrick said.

Once Reed was booked into the jail, Shupp took himself to the hospital with a thumb injury.

“Nothing was broken. It sounded like a sprain,” Patrick said.

Firelands Ambulance was dispatched to the gas station, where the wife was treated. Patrick said the woman refused to go to the hospital.

Reed had wanted to go to Mansfield, Patrick said, but he became upset because his wife “said she didn’t have enough gas to go to Mansfield.” The sheriff’s spokesman said Reed stabbed the dashboard twice and when he raised his arm in the air as if to stab his wife, she put her hand in the air to protect herself and was stabbed in the hand.

The suspect must post an $18,000 bond before being released from the Huron County Jail.
