A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 1/2 years in prison for sexually assaulting children.
Michael E. Pence Jr., was sentenced Monday on two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of attempted gross sexual imposition. Pence originally faced numerous rape charges as well as other sex offenses. Judge Frederick Pepple also classified Pence a Tier II sex offender requiring him to register his address where he lives with the sheriff's office for 25 years after his release from prison.
Pence was convicted in the sexual assault of children between 2004 and 2006 in St. Marys. The case came to light after a call from the Indiana Department of Children Services. That agency learned of the crimes from one of the child victims who lives there and passed the information on to the St. Marys Police Department, St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said.
There was more than one child victim. The children were not related to Pence but knew him as an "acquaintance," Foxhoven said.
All the crimes happened in St. Marys, the chief said.
