Two benefit events are set for Sunday for Maria Vera, a local woman who died from injuries sustained in a vicious attack, allegedly by her estranged husband and father of her two children.
A chicken dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Norwalk Eagles on Cline Street. The cost is $10 for a half chicken, macaroni salad and green beans.
Also, a quartermania is scheduled for 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Eagles hall. About 17 vendors will be present. People will be able to bid anywhere from 25 cents to a dollar
Vera, 22, of rural Norwalk, died June 14. The attack took place June 1 at her mother-in-law's residence near Berlin Heights.
The suspect, Jeremy P. Gallant, 26, was sent back to prison to serve the rest of a term imposed for an unrelated crime. He had been released on parole just prior to the attack, which involved numerous stabs with a screwdriver.
The couple's two children, Jeremy Jr., 2 1/2, and Corina, 9 months, are under the temporary custody of Jessica Rosas, Maria's sister.
Rosas took the children to attend the funeral in Texas, where Maria was from orginially and where she was buried. However, the three are required to return to Ohio for a July 14 custody hearing.
